Prices
Approximate prices are based on high season, double room, per person sharing. Some hotels are willing to negotiate on price.
Accommodation In recent years, with the huge growth of tourism to South Africa, bed-and-breakfast establishments and guest houses have sprung up all over the country, so much so that even without booking in advance you can generally find a place to stay. Phone ahead to the tourist office of the next town you will be visiting to secure excellent, reasonably priced accommodation. Hotel Staff Hotel personnel - chambermaids, porters, doormen - are not paid particularly well in South Africa, so, if you can, tip generously when leaving. Also, if you establish a personal relationship by talking to the staff - telling them about yourself and where you come from, and asking about them and their families - you will find that levels of service often improve dramatically. Touring by train If you are not in a hurry, long-distance travel by train is a wonderful, and relatively inexpensive, way to be accommodated and see the country at the same time. It is best to book first-class. You will be brought bedding by a steward, and can have all your meals in an old-fashioned dining-car. Budget Holidays Budget travellers are well catered for in South Africa. There are good camping and caravanning sites in all areas, including many National Parks. Some sites have only basic facilities, but many offer washing blocks, cooking areas and a swimming pool. In the cities and main tourist areas many backpacking lodges have opened in recent years. Township stays A new local phenomenon is the availability of bed-and-breakfasts in some of the townships and shack-settlements that fringe all the main urban centres. These give you a chance to experience the conditions in which many South Africans live. Contact the Tourism Offices in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg for details. Beautiful B&Bs Some of the most beautiful and relatively inexpensive accommodation can be found in guest houses and bed-and-breakfasts in the small towns and on farms in the rural areas. Often the buildings are Victorian or older, and the rooms are furnished with interesting old-fashioned pieces. Information about such places is sometimes hard to come by; ask locally, or follow the signs by the side of the road. |
